Counterfeit cashier's checks from the Bank of Walnut Creek are in circulation, according to an alert issued by First Republic Bank, which bought the Walnut Creek financial institution last year.
Bankers say counterfeit cashier's checks are a growing problem for the industry.
First Republic (NYSE: FRC) said it contacted the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. about the fraudulent cashier's checks bearing the Walnut Creek name.
The San Francisco banks said the counterfeit checks display the routing number 121138013, which is assigned to First Republic Bank. Counterfeit items are not similar to authentic cashier's checks. The top-left corner of the counterfeit items display the Bank of Walnut Creek name and address and a phone number not associated with the bank. Counterfeit items also have descriptions of security features embedded in the top and bottom borders. ...
